Overnight Corneal Refractive Therapy

Overnight Corneal Refractive Therapy
(CRT or Ortho-K)

Sleep your way to great vision!!

Wouldn’t it be great if you could be free of glasses and contact lenses throughout the day, without having to undergo surgery?

Regaining clear vision is so easy you can do it with your eyes closed!

What is it?

CRT (also known as Orthokeratology) is a safe, effective, non-surgical vision correction which offers a fully reversible vision correction that reshapes your cornea while you sleep so that when you awake you can enjoy clear, comfortable, vision all day long without glasses or ordinary contact lenses.

It especially suitable for active people who play sport and find it a hassle wearing glasses or contact lenses, or people working in dry or dusty environments where regular contact lenses can be difficult to tolerate.

Its especially great for children as Ortho-K can even slow down or halt the progression of myopia.

It’s also a brilliant alternative for people who do not want the expense or the risk of laser refractive surgery.

How does it work?

Ortho-K involves wearing specially shaped contact lenses that gently reshape the corneal surface during sleep. Upon waking, the contact lenses are removed and the reshaped cornea gives you clear, natural vision for the whole day and sometimes even longer.

With the introduction of high technology instrumentation it is now possible to accurately scan and digitally map the cornea. On the basis of these digital maps precision lenses are manufactured via computerised lathes that will achieve a controlled, precise and accurate flattening of the corneal surface to bring the eye into correct focus. New high oxygen permeability contact lens materials makes these lenses safe and comfortable for overnight wear.

The reshaping effect takes about a week to reach its full effect, although there is generally a large improvement after the first night of wear. If the contact lenses are not worn for several nights then the elastic corneal tissue reverts back to its original shape – making the process completely reversible and safe.

Myopia Control

Ortho-K will also slow down or halt the progression of short sightedness especially in children and teenagers. This is known as ‘myopia control’ and is the only means of controlling myopia and is well supported by scientific research.

Can anyone choose Ortho-K?

Ortho-K works on low to moderate amounts of myopia and low amounts of astigmatism. And it’s available for anyone over 6 or 7 years of age, being FDA approved for children.

Why should I have Ortho-K?

Ortho-K offers freedom from glasses and the hassle of wearing contact lenses during the day, enhancing your lifestyle if you require vision correction and giving you clear natural vision, all day, every day.

If you are an active individual you can freely participate in sports without the interference of glasses or bother of contact lenses. As these special lenses are worn while sleeping, eye irritation and dryness often associated with contact lens wear, are eliminated.

If you have been an unsuccessful contact lens wearer before chances are that you will still be able to succeed with Ortho-K.

Ortho-K is a safe and effective, surgery free method of managing your myopia.

How safe is Ortho-K?

  • The safety and effectiveness of Ortho-K has been demonstrated in independent studies at Universities in New Zealand, Australia and the United States and has been approved by the American FDA.
  • As with all contact lenses, regular check-ups and lens replacement as recommended are very important.

What are the advantages of Ortho-K?

  • 20/20 vision without spectacles or contact lenses during the day.
  • It is a non-surgical procedure.
  • It is reversible, modifiable and does not hurt.
  • It will slow down or halt the progression of myopia.
  • Using a well-established contact lens fitting technique and follow up care means that there are very few risks and no more than normal contact lens wear

How much does it cost?

Ortho-K is by far the least expensive form of long term contact lens correction and being less than 1/3 the cost of laser eye surgery, it is an affordable, safe and painless alternative to wearing glasses and contact lenses during the day.

The total cost for the full procedure is $1200 and can be paid in four monthly instalments of $300.
